Is it hype or is it for real?
I recently heard a friend of mine say that grass fed beef is all a bunch of hype. Because I'm not a chemist or bioligist, I often times avoid confrontation on these subjects - I'll leave it to the experts to explain, which is what I will do here as well! I'm sure my friend is not alone in her opinions, and of course we have to be smart consumers, our pesamistic side tells us it must just be an opportunity for farmers to simply make more money off a product that is the same as the cheaper product.
Well, here's the deal as I understand it.
- Farmers are in the business of making money. Grains are cheaper than maintaining grass, (think of your own lawn!)
- Cows evolved eating grass, this is what is natural for them to eat.
- Just as what we eat affects our muscles, organs, brain, etc., the same affect occurs on animals.
- Their diet is only part of it. Animals that live on farms where no consideration is made for the health of the animals, (such as feeding them grains,) usually house sick animals. Antibiotics are used to keep the animals as healthy as possible.
- When we eat the grain fed beef from animals that have been shot with antibiotics, we are eating all of these chemicals.
- There is also the happy factor. If you believe in energy and the transfer of energy and how that affects us chemically and synergistically, eating happy animals is better for you on a chemical level.
- These thoughts apply to the chickens as well. Chickens don't like to be cooped up into tight little cages. This harbors sickness and angst in their bodies.
